Warren Memorial Hospital will hold a Spring Training for the Young Thrower program beginning Feb. 18, just weeks before area baseball and softball seasons begin. Michael Mitchell, sports fitness instructor, said the program spans two days, which begins with a research and evidence-based educational lecture on proper shoulder care and typical injuries seen in softball and baseball players. “I hope the community can come to the free event,” he said. No fees are associated with this program. The lecture will be held at Skyline High School at 7 p.m. Feb. 18. He said that the hour-long lecture provides information on what players should be doing during the off-season, as well as information on in-season care, how the shoulder works, nutritional guidelines to follow, and how injuries work and affect players’ health and the ability to play sports. The second part of the event takes place on Feb. 20 with throwing warm-ups, cool-downs and technique training from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. “We are trying to reach out to the high schoolers before the season starts,” Mitchell said, “and get these thoughts in their head.” This event is geared toward anyone 10 years of age and older, including parents. Mitchell said he wants those who leave the program to take what they learn and apply it before, during and after their season. Registration is preferred ahead of time.
